Who can apply
Owning a firearm in India is legal but tightly regulated under the Arms Act, 1959 and the Arms Rules, 2016. Any resident Indian citizen above 21 years of age can apply for a licence, provided they have no disqualifying criminal record and can demonstrate a genuine reason — most commonly self-defence, sport, or crop protection.
The licensing authority is usually the District Magistrate or Commissioner of Police for your area. Their assessment weighs your stated need, your background, and local conditions, so a well-prepared application matters.
Documents you’ll typically need
While requirements vary slightly by state, most applicants should be ready with proof of identity and address, age proof, recent photographs, character and antecedent verification, a medical fitness certificate, and any document supporting your stated reason for needing a firearm.
Income-tax returns or proof of occupation are often requested as well, particularly where self-defence is cited on the basis of a perceived threat connected to your work.
The process, stage by stage
After you submit the application, the police conduct a background and antecedent verification. A field officer may visit your residence. The file then moves to the licensing authority, who may call you for an interview to assess your reason and your understanding of safe handling.
If approved, your licence specifies the category and number of firearms you may hold and the territorial validity. You then purchase from a licensed dealer, who endorses the firearm’s details onto your licence.
Renewals and responsibilities
Licences are valid for a fixed term and must be renewed before expiry. As a licence holder you are responsible for secure storage, for carrying the firearm only as permitted, and for keeping your ammunition within sanctioned limits. Violations can lead to suspension or cancellation.
